If you’re willing to drive a little further outside of San Jose to get to a place that sells traditional Japanese ingredients, Osaka Marketplace is well worth a visit.

This Japanese market has authentic Japanese snacks, fresh fruits, and vegetables, as well as great quality seafood, fresh meat, unique Japanese liquors, herbal teas, and beverages you won’t find elsewhere.

At the popular food court and cafe, you can order ramen dishes, crispy Japanese fried chicken, wagyu steak bento, and steak sandwiches, as well as coffees, fruit drinks, and teas. Osaka Marketplace even sells sushi and sashimi party trays, perfect for your next big event.

They even have an entire beauty section filled with a wide variety of cosmetics!

Thien Thanh Supermarket is a fantastic market for anyone shopping for items in bulk. The supermarket specializes in quality produce, seafood, meat, poultry, and a wide range of specialty Asian products like green tea ice cream and fresh pandan. Whatever you’re cooking, you can usually find it at Thien Thanh Supermarket. The supermarket’s convenient location in central San Jose and spacious parking lot make your shopping trip even easier.

Battambang Oriental Market

One of San Jose’s best-kept secrets, Battambang Oriental Market carries all the essentials, including rice noodles, red curry paste, fresh vegetables, canned items, and quality nam pa, which is a salty liquid made from fermented fish that makes an excellent addition to soups. Chocked full of flavor, the market’s authentic papaya salad is a favorite among customers. The market also carries a wide selection of products from Thailand that is hard to find elsewhere in the city.

Aborn Oriental Market

Surrounded by tasty restaurants and tucked away in a strip mall, Aborn Oriental Market is a small, family-owned market with a welcoming vibe. Though the building is small, the owners are sure to keep the shelves fully stocked with a wide range of items from the Philippines. Popular items include frozen foods, baked goods, and an array of delicacies that will give you a taste of the islands. The tapa, tocino, and garlic longganisa and the fresh taro leaves and array of fruit make Aborn a popular place to shop.

Santo Market Inc. 

Santo Market Inc. is one of the largest Chinese, Japanese, and Hawaiian markets in San Jose. Having been in business since 1946, the market is also one of the oldest of its kind in the city. The market’s location is right near the heart of the San Jose’s Japantown, so you can go explore there after shopping. At Santo Market Inc., you’ll find a wide range of grocery items, as well as fresh meats from the in-store Japanese deli. 

You can also shop for homemade Japanese pickles and other prepared foods. If you’re feeling like a sit-down meal, you can buy a plate lunch and a fresh hot coffee or an espresso specialty drink. The market sells delicious Asian sandwiches, and takeout and catering are also available. The multilingual staff can serve customers in English, Spanish, and Japanese and make recommendations for anyone unsure of what to order.

Just outside of San Jose in Sunnyvale lies Hankook Supermarket, a large, modern market featuring a vast selection of Korean foods and other Asian specialty foods. Many consider this mega-sized Korean supermarket to be the best in the area for meat and fresh seafood. Fresh fruits and dry goods are also plentiful. Within the market, you can shop at several smaller stores and find housewares like pots, pans, and dishes. 

If you’re looking to put together a quality meal, Hankook Supermarket also has hot food and banchan bars featuring fried chicken, japchae, stir-fried anchovies, entire vats of marinated baby octopus, and dozens of varieties of spicy kimchi. The traditional Korean barbeque is some of the best in the area. Weekly specials are also available for repeat customers, as are catering services.
